Odienne province in the northwest of Cô te d ‘Ivoire borders Mali and Guinea, where China Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd. (China Harbor) undertook the northern highway project. In the dry season, the sun is shining and the dust is flying. In the roar of construction machinery, Kama, a young man from Togo, Africa, and his China master Li Jian are carrying measuring equipment and walking on the newly compacted subgrade in tandem.
When he arrived at the survey point, Li Jian turned his head and shouted in several languages "jargon": "Kama, go and see the elevation here, it’s the same as that in front, and let me know when it’s ready." Mixed sentences in Chinese, English and French are the main ways of communication between teachers and apprentices. Kama immediately understood, put down the tripod, took out the GPS, and the two of them started the day’s measurement work.
The total length of the highway project in northern Cô te d ‘Ivoire is about 230 kilometers, which is undertaken by China Harbor, and CCCC No.1 Navigation Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd. (CCCC No.1 Navigation Bureau) is responsible for the construction of the third bid section of the project. When completed, the northern highway will become the main traffic artery connecting Mali and Guinea, and it will also be an important part of the road network of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Kama has been working in CCCC No.1 Navigation Bureau for nearly three years. He and Li Jian, the survey squad leader, first worked in the Abidjan Port yard project undertaken by China Harbor. At the beginning of this year, they came to the northern highway project one after another and became surveyors here. In Kama’s words, "wherever Master goes, I will go".
"Li Jian is a very good teacher," Kama told reporters while waving his hand to direct his colleague who was inserting piles. "I was trained in topographic surveying in Lomé (the capital of Togo), but the field operation was completely different. Master helped me, and I mastered more basic knowledge and learned his experience every day."
Engineering survey is complicated but indispensable. Before further construction, each road section has to go through strict procedures such as point setting, coordinate calculation and setting-out acceptance. In addition, due to the high engineering standard and large topographic relief of some road sections, the survey work needs to be more detailed, otherwise it may be "a thousand miles away".

"Kama is very smart. When he came to the interview, I saw that he had a good measurement foundation. " Li Jian told reporters, "Over the past few years, we have had a special tacit understanding. I don’t speak foreign languages very well, but I don’t have to say too much when I work together. He will soon understand what I mean."
In the past three years, Kama studied hard beside Li Jian, and gradually grew from a semi-apprentice to a qualified surveyor. Now, Kama also has a small team of three or four people, who can independently lead the team to carry out the measurement work. Kama also studied software drawing in his spare time, hoping to undertake more work in the future.
"The northern highway project in Kamalai is earlier than me and more familiar with the process. We learn from each other." Li Jian said.
"I worked in other companies before I came here, but I prefer it here." Kama said, "It provides more job opportunities and room for improvement for foreign employees. We are respected here and have received a lot of professional skills training, which is of great benefit to career planning."

According to Li Yangchun, manager of the Northern Highway Project, since the project started in March 2020, there have been 1,700 people at the peak of the project construction, providing more than 1,500 jobs for the local surrounding communities, and there are more than 100 foreign managers like Kama. During the implementation of the project, enterprises purchased local cement, diesel oil, steel bars and other materials, leased local equipment, and indirectly created more than 2,000 jobs.
"Kama is an excellent master surveyor trained by ourselves on the project." Yin Zhiliang, director of Kama’s work area, said, "Now he can solve the problems encountered in the measurement work independently, which is not only efficient, but also meticulous, and pays attention to equipment maintenance."
"I returned to China for the New Year two months ago, and Kama did not forget to send a message greeting." Li Jian took out his mobile phone and showed the reporter their chat records. "It is a rare fate to meet him in Africa."
