Before and after the verdict in the first instance of the case of killing a wife and burning a corpse: from marriage to "only wanting him to be brought to justice"

Liu’s father burned a copy of the marriage certificate. The pictures in this article were all taken by The Paper reporter Jing Li intern Duan Wenzhao.
On the morning of July 30th, the case of killing a wife and burning a corpse in Shanghai was pronounced in Shanghai No.1 Intermediate Court. The defendant Yan Haojie was convicted of intentional homicide and arson, and was sentenced to death and deprived of political rights for life.
The mother of the victim Liu told the The Paper that she always "couldn’t sleep for days" before each trial. Now, she can finally give her daughter an explanation.
One gambling, two broken.
According to Liu’s father, Liu is a primary school teacher in Shanghai. She is always filial and clever. She and Yan Haojie were introduced by neighbors. Seeing the young man’s spiritual sunshine and living near Liu’s unit, Liu’s parents felt that they could continue to talk.
This is Liu’s first love. Ms. Zou, a friend of Liu’s mother, said: "She usually listens to her mother’s words, and it is good for her mother to say yes." On January 1, 2020, the two sides held a wedding.
In the eyes of Liu’s relatives and friends, the young couple have a good relationship, "never quarreled." A few days before the incident, Liu bought a box of strawberries. Yan Haojie also washed the strawberries, called her baby and fed them to her personally.
Ms. Zou said that this should have been a harmonious and happy marriage. "Yan Haojie is too scum, and his parents have not cultivated it well."
No one would have thought that less than three months after their wedding, a murder and arson case caused by gambling directly destroyed these two families.
At 8 o’clock in the morning of March 20, 2020, Yan Haojie entered her father-in-law’s mother-in-law’s house. At that time, Liu’s parents had gone to work and she was the only one left at home. Yan Haojie stabbed Liu’s neck three times with a knife after asking Liu for money and gambling debts were rejected. After seeing Liu’s death, Yan Haojie set fire to destroy the body. Appraised by the judiciary, Liu was stabbed in the neck by a sharp instrument, which caused the left subclavian artery to rupture and died of massive bleeding.
According to Liu’s father’s memory, on the day of the incident, the neighbors first noticed the smoke coming from his house. After the alarm, the fire truck arrived at the scene within half an hour. I hurried back. At this time, only the corridor could walk. "The doors are burning." He noticed that the security door at home was open, but he and his wife locked the door after work every day. Only he and his wife, daughter Liu and son-in-law Yan Haojie had the key.
Liu’ s father was covered with sheets that were drying outside, and asked his neighbors to sprinkle water and get wet. He wanted to rush into the house to find his daughter and was stopped by firefighters. My daughter’s dog "Sugar Sugar", which had been raised for many years before her death, also ran into the savior and was killed in the sea of fire. After the fire was put out, the police explored the scene and found that it was arson.
"After finishing the transcript, the neighbors all know that he (Yan Haojie) set the fire, and only we are still in the dark." They never imagined that their obedient daughter died by her husband’s sword. Just a few days before the incident, Liu used a pregnancy test stick to find out that she was pregnant. Her mother promised her to take her to the hospital for examination when the epidemic improved.
Yan Haojie’s father’s testimony shows that on the day of the crime, Yan Haojie came home, pale and trembling, and said that he had killed his wife. Strict father asked how his wife was. He said it was hopeless. Later, strict father advised him to surrender to the public security organs.
Liu’s father said that Yan Haojie’s family never said anything about Yan Haojie’s gambling misdeeds. "If I had known that he would gamble, I would never have married my daughter to him."
Liu’s father still remembers that after the incident, his wife went to Yan Haojie’s home and wanted to get back what her daughter had left, but Yan Haojie’s family locked the door and called 110. Until the trial, the defendant’s relatives and friends never contacted her to apologize and blacked out her WeChat phone.
"Our greatest wealth is gone."
It took 497 days from the case to the trial. I heard that Yan Haojie was finally sentenced to death. Liu’s aunt lost control and fell to the ground crying.
Holding the verdict, the victim’s mother’s mood could not be calmed down for a long time. She said with tears: "The murderer has finally been sentenced to death, and I have an explanation for my daughter."
Anxiously waiting at the gate of the court, there is also Ms. Zhang, the parent of the student who was taught by Liu. Recalling the interaction between Teacher Liu and the students, Ms. Zhang burst into tears several times. She told the The Paper reporter that Liu was gentle and patient, and had a good relationship with the parents of the students, regardless of whether the students’ grades were good or bad.
On a spring outing, Mr. Liu took care of more than 40 students by himself, but he took care of everyone and bought paper towels and snacks for the children. When waiting for the return bus, she sat in a chair to rest, and several girls surrounded her affectionately: "Miss Liu, shall I braid your hair?"
In the eyes of Ms. Zhang, Teacher Liu is "like a sister" to her children.
On the afternoon of the verdict, Liu’s relatives and friends went to the cemetery to pay homage, and parents wanted to tell their daughter the result at the first time. In the trunk, there are fruits, snacks and drinks that my daughter loved to eat before her death.

Liu’s parents spoke to their daughter at the grave.
Before the tomb, the father read the verdict to his daughter and burned the copy of the verdict and marriage certificate together. They told their dead daughter, "The marriage certificate was burned for you. From now on, you have nothing to do with this beast … … Take care of yourself. "
The photo on Liu’s tombstone was taken by her specially for primary school entry. Liu’s relative said, "This is her favorite photo."
Liu’s parents tore apart their daughter’s favorite snacks and put them in front of the tomb, putting two copies of each, and also paying homage to the little life in her daughter’s stomach.
"She promised to take me to travel during the summer vacation." Liu’s mother said that on weekends, her daughter would take herself to the movies and buy clothes, and all the clothes she chose for herself were burned in the fire. After the incident, the clothes on Liu’s mother were temporarily given to her by several sisters.

Liu’s father read the verdict to his daughter.
When sorting out the relics, Liu’s mother found a teaching CD of the school, which recorded her daughter’s appearance in class. Liu’s mother put it in the bedside table and often turned it out.
"She used to kiss me as soon as she entered the door. Who will kiss me now?" Liu’s mother said that her peers have children and grandchildren to support the elderly, but she is "his daughter was also killed and his house was burned down." As for the days to come, "only two old people live alone."
In the fire, most of Liu’s objects were burned, leaving his parents with almost only photos and chat records in his mobile phone. Today, Liu’s mother’s mobile phone lock screen is still a photo of her daughter. Before the trial, she also sent a message to her daughter’s previous WeChat, telling her that the verdict was coming out.
Liu’s father told The Paper that they are not considering civil litigation for the time being, and their only appeal is that Yan Haojie is put to death. "Our greatest wealth is gone. What’s the use of asking for money?"
